Supplier Quality Pack Explained: What QA Teams Require Before Approving Gasket Suppliers

What Is a Supplier Quality Pack?

A supplier quality pack (SQP) is a detailed collection of documents that a gasket manufacturer submits to a customer’s QA team before production begins. It provides documented evidence that the supplier’s materials, processes, and finished parts consistently meet the required specifications. 

A complete SQP provides full material traceability from the receipt of raw resin to the delivery of the finished gasket. If a quality issue surfaces later, both the supplier and the customer can trace the batch back to its source in the documented process.

 

Essential Documents in a Supplier Quality Pack

QA teams review documentation across several areas to verify production readiness. We structure these documents to provide complete transparency into the manufacturing setup.

• Design and Engineering Records: These files confirm that the supplier manufactures the component to the exact specifications requested. Design records include engineering drawings, CAD models, dimensional tolerances, and authorized design-change records.

• Process Flow Diagrams: This document maps every single stage of the production cycle. It tracks the material from compounding and extrusion to cutting, welding, magnetic strip insertion, and final packaging.

• Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA): The process of FMEA identifies potential production risks and assigns control measures to mitigate them. For gasket production, an FMEA can address the risk of temperature fluctuations during extrusion which cause weak profile walls.

• Control Plans: These plans specify how the production team monitors key parameters during manufacturing. They dictate the frequency of inspections and the tools required.

• Measurement Systems Analysis (MSA): An MSA validates the accuracy of the inspection equipment itself. The tools used to measure gasket dimensions should provide repeatable, reproducible results.

• Part Submission Warrant (PSW): The supplier quality pack concludes with a formal document where the supplier certifies that all submitted samples represent what the production line will consistently deliver.

 

Testing and Inspection Requirements for Gasket Approval

Documentation establishes the production intent, and physical testing confirms the actual output. To achieve gasket approval, QA teams need physical evidence covering material composition, sealing performance, dimensional accuracy, and visual surface quality:

1. Material Testing

Material testing verifies that the PVC compound formulation matches the engineering specification. Tests evaluate durometer hardness, tensile strength, volatile loss, brittleness temperature, heat aging resistance, water absorption, and ozone resistance. The results of these tests confirm that the PVC compound meets strict freezer gasket standards and will withstand the temperature conditions and service demands of refrigerators and freezers.

2. Performance Testing

Performance testing simulates real operating conditions on finished gasket samples. 

• Compression set testing measures whether the gasket recovers its shape after prolonged compression under specific heat loads.

• Thermal cycling evaluates the gasket’s flexibility across the full operating temperature range. 

• Chemical resistance testing confirms that the PVC material withstands the cleaning agents used in commercial refrigeration.

• Magnetic pull force testing measures the strength of the magnetic strip to guarantee the door closes securely without being too difficult to open.

 

3. Dimensional Inspection

This phase confirms that the gasket profile geometry matches the engineering drawings. QA teams use cross-section measurement tools, high-resolution optical systems, or 3D scanning equipment to compare production samples against CAD specifications.

For magnetic gasket profiles, the position of the magnetic strip and the geometry of the sealing lip must be within tight tolerances. Variation in either dimension directly affects closure force and seal quality.

4. Visual Inspection

Technicians assess the surface finish for smoothness and color consistency. They check the weld integrity at all corners and verify the complete absence of surface cracks, material flow marks, or dimensional distortion.

The supplier evaluation process follows a strict sequence before a manufacturer earns approved status:

1. Requirements Definition: Engineering and procurement teams establish the exact gasket specifications. They define the QA requirements and set the delivery standards for the specific application.

2. Pre-Screening: Procurement teams assess quality certifications, historical gasket experience, financial stability, and total production capacity before requesting the full technical documentation.

3. Documentation Review: The customer reviews the submitted supplier quality pack against their internal gasket QA checklist. They check for accuracy and compliance with their engineering standards.

4. Sample Evaluation: The QA department inspects first-article parts produced on actual mass-production equipment. They test these physical samples against the initial drawing specifications.

5. Facility Audit: QA teams verify on-site or remotely that production controls, inspection systems, and corrective action procedures match the submitted documentation.

6. Final Approval Decision: Suppliers meeting the scoring thresholds across quality performance, production capability, and delivery reliability officially join the approved supplier list.
