PVC Compound additives and Enhancements

Share

Vinyl resin is one of the most widely used thermoplastic polymers globally. It is the foundation of vinyl and polyvinyl compounds used extensively across a wide range of technical and industrial applications due to their broad versatility. For a polyvinyl compound to reach its usefulness and be made into products, combinations with special additives are made to influence the product’s properties and characteristics suitable for customized applications. Additives can change the product’s rigidity, elasticity, durability, and colors. As a result, the vinyl resin is a cost-efficient and long-lasting material with diverse applications, characteristics, and market uses.

PVC Compounding additives

PVC compound’s versatility comes from its broad range compatibility with different additives. A significant advantage of PVC is its ability to accept plasticizers to make it more flexible for specified products application. PVC compounding additives include:

  • Heat stabilizers: used to reduce the damage and degradation of polymer exposed to heat.
  • Lubricants: for production
  • Plasticizers: for a fixable product compounding used in cables, gaskets, etc.
  • Impact modifiers:  for better impact shock absorption and damage reduction.
  • Colorants: pigments used to change the color of polymer
  • Flame retardants: reduce the flammability of plastic products.
  • Compatibilizers: enable plastic recycling processes.

Heat stabilizers additives

Heat stabilizers are a core additive in every vinyl formulation process. They prevent the decomposition of PVC during the compounding process. Moreover, they also boost the durability against the weathering and deterioration caused by heat through time.

Lubricant additives

In the compounding process lubricants are used externally to reduce the friction between the material and the surfaces of the equipment. Lubricants are also used internally to separate the PVC pellets.

Plasticizer additives

Plasticizers are used in PVC compounds to make them softer and increase their flexibility. There are various types of plasticizers used with different molecular weights. Some plasticizers are included in products we use every day, and some are explicitly used in specific applications to withstand certain circumstances, such as high heat or very low temperatures.

Compatibilizers

Blending plastics for recycling purposes doesn’t usually result in useful production. Thus, compatibilizers enable plastic recycling processes by reducing the interfacial energy produced from mixing polymers. Accordingly, adhesion is increased to mix PVC with other plastics successfully.
